I was good at school stuff so it took me quite a while to realize how slow I was on the uptake of life. With His help, I'm getting there and He doesn't give up on me even when I try to give up on myself. So on we go...I've been pondering Elijah, too. I love him. I hate it when some preachers refer to him as a quitter. Really? He stood up to the biggest power couple of his day without flinching and miracles manifested mightily through him.

I certainly made a mess of my college (short!) experience long ago…but regardless, I have certainly learned by doing from the “laboratory of my own life. “ I am so glad you also love dear Elijah and I would be most upset if I heard a Pastor suggest that Elijah was a “quitter”. That’s fightin’ words! As I said in my writing piece, the Bible is full of the flawed of the world, just as our world in 2026. No others to use except all of us who are flawed as well. Elijah had his difficult moments…but indeed defied the powers that be in Ahab and Jezebel. He triumphed and handed his mantle to Elisha to carry on the work, when God called him to Heaven in a literal whirlwind! Blessings always to you, H.J., for reading my work, I am grateful! Wendy
What an interesting connection to God’s word in comparing your experience with Elijah’s! I love how God wraps Elijah in His love and strengthens him, just like He does with each of us. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you, Emma Roberts! I get the title and theme of each weekly piece I write on Substack, directly from Holy Spirit! Elijah always fascinated me, from the height of his battle and triumph over the pagan priests of Ba’al and then his following fleeing at the threat to his life, from Jezebel, the ruling queen. God did not harass him or lecture him or castigate him but treated him gently, with food and drink from the angel sent to help him and from guiding him to further work before bringing him Home in a whirlwind!! God’s ways are so creative and fascinating! Blessings to you, Emma!
So many things to comment about here, but I was struck be your comment, "sidelined by grief". So, true. Nothing better than grief, when combined with guilt, to take you out of the game of life, cause confusion, fade your plans, and turn you, over the years, into someone your younger self wouldn't recognize. I think it happens to all of us to a certain degree. I've never been good at handling grief.
Joan, BLESS you! You captured the spirit of what I was saying and indeed, grief, when combined with guilt…indeed can take you out of the game of life….I am astounded I still live! I am not good at handling grief either.
