WAR BY PRAYER
Battle in the Realm of the Spirit
Ephesians 6:12 “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”
Hebrews 4:12 “For the word of God is quick, and powerful and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”
I have found that God is crafty! In fact, the more I get to know Him ( by spending time around Him) , I have begun calling Him “ Stealth Papa.”
He knows things. He knows the enemy we are up against, the fallen archangel who sought to take over and was instead, unceremoniously kicked out of Heaven along with his rebellious angels. Losers, all !
God is not crafty by subterfuge! Instead, since he knows us 100%, He hides things in plain sight. He stirs up our handy-dandy “Detectives”, who love a mystery and a challenge! Human condition, correct?
How can you “war by prayer?” Isn’t prayer the opposite of war??
Have you ever heard of Imprecatory Prayer?? More on that in a moment...but read some of the rants of King David in the book of Psalms!!! Whew!! (See below)
Spiritual warfare is just as real. The battle between good and evil rages on...but the Host of Heaven, the Warring Angels sent from the Father, are constantly on the battlefield of the spiritual realm, as the spiritual realm deeply affects the material realm.
For myself, having lost two family members to war ( an Uncle on D-Day, June 1944 and buried in Normandy, France, and a brother in Vietnam, August 1968) one would think I flee from any reference to war...and yet part of my temperament is that of a certain type of warrior ( blunt, plainspoken, one who sees beyond the surface of humans.)
The spiritual realm is every bit as formidable as the material realm, if not more so.
My battlefield is prayer! It works in most unusual and unexpected ways.
Prayer is not begging. It is not cajoling. It is not whining or wheedling.
It is a blunt and raw and direct conversation with the Creator of the Universe, an interplay of spirit to spirit. It is light versus darkness.
Prayer is not always polite...and Imprecatory Prayers in a moment...
I know a mighty man of God who after heartfelt prayer that was not answered...threw a rock at God! I have heard of Pastors having loud ( private) discussions with God when some desperate prayer of multiple people was not answered...and the grief was raw and ragged and not quiet.
The core of the Christian faith is not weak, nor meek and mild. It is a warrior faith all the way...and yes, God can “take” our angry rants even in prayer or despair. (see David in some Psalms)
Look at what Christ Himself dealt with?? Earthly powers of money and force...big and loud and not polite and not happy their power is threatened...(Roman rulers...?? Traditional church powers and structures?? Money and influence???)
Christ barreled right into the core of power.....ohh...not polite. It was needful. He went directly for the jugular and He provoked.
BUT... you know what Christ did a LOT OF??
Prayer. He went off to pray alone all the time. Not a polite “prayer meeting” with the His disciples...but likely heartfelt and dynamic and LOUD prayer to the Father...like, “Help, Father, I have to deal with these difficult humans!! Help Me. strengthen Me, undergird Me!”
I am what is called an “Intercessor “, one who intercedes or stands in the gap for other people or situations. I pray as I am guided by God’s Holy Spirit and leave the results up to Him.
Are my prayers always answered as I pray them? No. That includes for myself and others.
Do I trust God’s greater wisdom in the prayer realm? Yes, more and more. He knows things past, present and future and is worthy of our trust, even when we are rather gnarly towards Him.
Life is not a calm and smooth event. It is not predictable, despite our determination to keep chaos at bay.
Prayer is a profound and desperately needed lifeline.
Prayer is also a weapon of spiritual warfare, which is wielded by a spiritual sword. This is not a physical battle.
It can be declarations, it can be decrees, it can be pronouncements...and it can be IMPRECATORY PRAYER. I always wondered at the rage expressed by David in multiple Psalms ( I will name a couple at the end of this piece). I think Christ expressed the same, as He did battle with the implacable powers that be, who refused to see the miracles He did repeatedly and who had no interest in even a discussion. Christ reminded them of the murders of some of the great prophets of Israel of old...and quite bluntly.
Imprecatory prayer is to me, like a last resort, that when we see such evil, that refuses to repent, is recalcitrant and rebellious to God and is truly a block to good, we bring the whole mess before the Father and ask for judgment and a rebuking of evil. It is mighty scary stuff...but considering the condition of the world in 2025...I think it just may be time for some of these prayers...
These are ONLY done with consistent guidance from Holy Spirit. We are NEVER to just charge in unprepared!! These are not done in human power or judgment or praying against someone because you dislike them. Not remotely that. This is hard core and primal spiritual warfare, Host of Heaven stuff in which the mightiest of God’s Angelic Army are charging into primal battle to bring down the darkness. It is relentless and I know Who wins in the end! Christ Himself charged directly into Hell after His death on the Cross of Calvary and while He was certainly an unexpected visitor there by the residents of Hell, He did rescue prisoners there. He also captured the Keys of Hell and of Death from the devil’s hands! Not a polite battle! Christ emerged in victory and brought that back when He spent His final few weeks with His followers before He ascended back Home to His Father in Heaven. This is a spiritual battle indeed, the prime one of history.
God is not our “Fairy Godfather”, Who answers every prayer immediately in triplicate. Since He knows the results of things unseen, He does indeed know what is best for us, our gifts, our struggles and our temperament.
Sometimes the best prayer is “ Papa God, HELP!!!”.. This is my go-to prayer, simple and direct and too often, in desperation. ( I spent much of today in tears…and doing just that, offering desperate prayers before Papa God.) Then we listen deeply for the counsel of Holy Spirit in what our part is in answers to prayer. Step by step, we partner with God in this great and life- affirming journey. It is not “pronouncement”, it is “participation”.
Perhaps we could make use of this right now, yes?

--Two imprecatory prayers from Psalms, check these out: Psalm 35 and Psalm 73, very intense!
--Also, check out this very powerful song sung by Molly Skaggs, singer Ricky Skaggs’ daughter. This is from a concert at Bethel Church in Redding, California from January 5, 2019. Song is called “Ain’t no grave” and is what I consider to be an anthem to victory against the darkness. Just type in on a search engine: “Ain’t no grave, LIVE Bethel music Molly Skaggs.” You want the video that features Molly there with her guitar, singing this powerful song, with Melissa Helser dancing on the stage nearby nearby, in praise! The video should be right there on the top left side when the page opens. This stirs up your soul and spirit to the power of God! It is several minutes long but well-worth the time for feeding your spirit! Turn it up! A spiritual warfare song all the way!

Sometimes prayer is referred to as a wrestle before God. Not that we are trying to change His will, but that we are trying to understand His will and align ours with Him.
Thirteen years of Catholic school and I don't remember imprecatory prayer. It does sound Old Testament. (Maybe I was busy passing notes in religion class!) Now I know. Thank you... Good post, Wendy.
